Today I want to take a little bit of a different tack and talk about three of the biggest mistakes that people make when they’re trying to build their web design business. So if you are trying to start your own web design and development business, you want to stick around, because that’s what we’re going to be talking about today on today’s episode of Quick Tips Tuesday.
Welcome back, everybody. My name is Rob Orr. If we haven’t met before, I’m a web designer and developer. I help people build their own web design businesses and scale them and grow them into win bigger and better clients and ultimately make their businesses more profitable. What we’re going to talk about today are three of the biggest mistakes that I see that people are making when it comes to building their web design business. You ready? Let’s jump in.
The first mistake that I want to talk about today is that you don’t charge enough for your projects. The problem comes from this. You don’t believe in your skills, you haven’t done the research to find out who your target market is. You are just overwhelmed with the thought that you need all this other stuff in order to be able to charge bigger ticket prices for your web design and development projects. That is absolutely a myth. It is absolutely a lie. You do not need to get stuck in that rut.
If you’re not charging enough for your web design projects, you’re doing both your client a disservice and you’re doing yourself a disservice. The problem is that you end up resenting your client and you end up not even wanting to do the job because you feel like you’re working for peanuts.
They do care about one thing though, and that’s your ability to deliver results for them on their project. Worry about that, and you will be able to scale your business. The final mistake that I want to talk about today is that you think that you have to have this huge portfolio full of all this super high quality work in order to win clients. Simply put, that’s not true.
You need to be able to communicate value, demonstrate your competency, show them how you have blown the doors off with your own website, and how you’ve already got all that functionality built in there. You’re going to be well on your way to winning the right kinds of clients.
