Recently, I’ve spent a lot of time evaluating what’s transpired in the past, my experiences and what the future holds and I’m noticing some trends. Our world is definitely changing – the social web is changing the way we do business, there are more opportunities than ever to blaze your own path and the balance of power seems to be returning to the customer.
This last point really got me thinking. Having read Chris Brogan and Julien Smith’s Trust Agents and Gary Vaynerchuk’s Crush It I’m more convinced than ever that the corporate behemoths of the world absolutely must stand up and take notice and actually pay attention to what their customers want. Fading fast are the days when these companies can dictate to the consuming public what they’ll buy and on who’s terms.
So now to my question (to myself as well) what are you actually delivering in terms of value? Having worked in sales for many years there was always talk about "value propositions" and "value-added" services that are designed so that these companies can command a premium for their product/service. Most of the time they’re just words and differentiation is just an illusion.
For me – here is what I am going to focus on this year:
- Legitimate Quality
It’s not what you get in life that makes you valuable – it’s what you become, as I’ve learned. It’s time for those huge corporate monsters of the world to take notice that principles such as this apply not only to the individual, but to themselves as organizations as well.
