If you want to be heard above the din of all the noise in the internet world and want to build a brand on the web, then you absolutely must pick up this book. Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World is filled with so much good stuff that you simply can’t pass this up. Website owners, writers, other creatives or anyone just interested in learning how to build an outstanding platform will love this book.
I don’t know how much of what Michael has written here is actually “new” or “ground-breaking” but what makes it unique is the way the subject is covered. It’s written in a very practical way with tons of take-aways and it’s incredibly accessible. It’s a road-map as well as a glimpse in to the thought process of one who has made it happen with great success.
Easy to Read
He walks you through the process of building a great platform from the ground up. He starts on your offering – your product or service – and helps to make sure you make it “wow!”, then takes you to building an awesome blog, and building a solid presence via social media and to building a consistent, awesome brand, and finally covers how to manage it all and work with your community.
Many of the chapters read like blog posts, partially because that’s the way many of them started out. Hyatt communicates in a smooth, conversational way that makes it easy to get through to see the point that’s being made. This book is super easy to read and it doesn’t overwhelm you with a bunch of stuff you don’t need.
Take Heed Website Owners & Writers
Website owners would do themselves a favor by paying special attention to the chapters on setting up your website and creating content. The sections on building landing pages alone is worth the price of admission. There is also a ton of great stuff on building your list and creating compelling calls to action throughout your site. All you have to do is look at his site and follow his references in the book to see how he’s nailing it on all this stuff.
Content creators will also do well to pay attention to the advice he has for them. There is a ton of wisdom here about how to create great content. Of special note is his appendix for novelists on blogging. The ideas he presents here are all posts that I would love to read from my favorite fiction writers!
A Wealth of Resources
It’s also full of resources. There is an entire section in the back of the book that outlines the tools and blog posts that he mentions throughout the book so you can read and reference as you work through it.
And that’s one thing that I would definitely encourage you to do: work through it. Look at your “platform” – your website, your social media presence, your offering – with a critical eye and see how it compares to what he’s talking about here. Make sure you bookmark and refer back to the book as you’re working on these different aspects of your business. This is one of those books that you will want to keep close by as you’re working on these things and refer to regularly.
If you have ever wanted to sit down with someone who has been there and done that in the world of blogging and social media then you need this book. I felt like I had Michael on retainer as a consultant – there was so much good stuff here. This work is the most accessible, practical and ready-to-go resource I’ve seen on the subject.
