Want to start your own web design business but not sure where to start? Not sure if you’ve got the skills?
This episode represents the first in a new aspect I’m bringing in to the podcast – how to build your own web design business.
And there are lots of things that block us up, and slow us down. Today is the first of the myths that need to be busted when it comes to building your own successful web design business.
Welcome, everybody. My name is Rob Orr. Today, I want to talk to you about big myths that are common when it comes to starting and building your own web design business. Welcome, everybody. If we haven’t met before, like I said, my name is Rob Orr.
I’m going to be talking about these myths and things that we buy into when it comes to starting and building a web design business. If you don’t know me, I just want to give you a little bit of background. I help freelancers and agencies and web developers build lucrative online service businesses without a big name brand by implementing systems and processes that help them win high quality clients, big budget clients and maximize their profitability of their business.
That’s a little bit about me. I’ve been doing web design and development for 15 years. I have been running web agencies for the last 10 years. I’ve come to learn a lot of different things about this business. I wanted to come online today to start by dispelling one of the biggest myths that I run into when it comes to doing online business. Before I go too much further, I want to make sure that you can hear me okay.
I’m using a new microphone. If you can just give me a thumbs up or give me a heart, let me know that you can hear this okay and that I’m coming through loud and clear. That would be awesome. I would really appreciate that.
Awesome. Thanks, Jake. I see we got Jake online and that is fantastic. I’m glad that we got some people watching live whether you’re getting hit live now or catching on the replay. That’s totally fine too. I just wanted to come in here and talk about this because this is something that is near and dear to my own heart.
If you see me looking around a little bit, I’ve got some notes over here to make sure that I don’t go too far off tangent. It’s kind of hard to know even what day of the week it is right now. I just got off another call. We were trying to figure out and just make sure today still is Tuesday. Right?
We’re all kind of stuck here in this Coronavirus intermediate state for lack of a better term and trying to make the best of what we can. You can see I’m supporting my Coronavirus haircut here too. What I want to get into today and talk about is one of the biggest myths that we run into when it comes to building your web design business.
I wrote a post about this the other day and I would really like to get your feedback on this. One of the biggest things that stops us when it comes to building successful businesses regardless. It could be any kind of business is the voice that we hear in our head. It’s the voice that is telling us that we’re not good enough or that we don’t know enough, or that nobody is going to like what we’re doing.
Nobody’s going to be into what we’re talking about. Nobody is going to be interested in listening to what I have to talk about. The whole point of doing Facebook Live is to get out there is anybody even going to care. We start to buy into this lie that this voice tells us that we have to be able to start a web design business specifically, we buy into this lie that we have to be some kind of super programming nerd.
That we have to know all these different kinds of computer languages. That we need to be a super high level developers and designers in order to do this. If you can relate to that, definitely give me a thumbs up. Hit me up with a like. Give me a heart something like that. Let me know that this is resonating with you.
Because I know for me, this is definitely where I struggled with when I was getting started. The thing that I wanted to talk to you about today is nothing could be further from the truth. You don’t have to be some kind of super programming nerd to start your own web design and development business.
Just to give you a little bit of backstory, a little bit of context. I’ve been doing this for a really long time. My daughter is 15 and I started around the time that she was born. At least started getting serious about this around the time that she was born.
I still got pictures in all our digital pictures of her in her crib or in her carrier in my office while I was working on web stuff. I know that it goes back at least that far. Back when I was getting started, I had bought into this lie that I had to be this super nerd to be able to do this that I had to know all these programming languages to do this. It took a while for me to figure out that that wasn’t even true at all.
I actually ended up winning a client early on as I was starting to do this. I had a good friend of mine, who the business that she worked for needed a website. I told her, “Well, I do web design. I could totally help you with that.” It was one of those things. It was like, yeah, did I really just say that? Am I really going to start?
Because my background before then had been working in business to business sales. I had graduated from Florida State was embarked on this career of going down this path for business to business sales. I was always fascinated with web design and web development so I dug into this with both feet.
I figured out that, “Hey, I can actually do this.” I learned that I don’t actually have to be a programming nerd to be able to do this. I don’t have to be some superstar programmer because don’t know about you. For me, I always felt like I had to be able to compete with all these big names in the field that if they saw the stuff that I did they would be laughing at me.
They would dismiss me easily and quickly because of my lack of coding abilities. I don’t know if you guys have ever felt like that before. For me, that was definitely a big deal. I learned you don’t have to know all these things.
I ended up winning more clients after that. I ended up getting bigger and better jobs. My coding skills improved over time, but that doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that I didn’t need to know all these things in order to build a business.
What I did was I figured out how to do these things. Just kind of as an aside, one of the things that I did was that I figured out how to build an e commerce site before I even knew how to do it for a client. I was building company websites and just figuring out these things all along the way.
It was just trying to figure out things as you go. That’s what I did. I kept putting one foot in front of the other and kept on doing all this stuff too, and ended up building a business and a career out of doing these things.
What I’ve done is without being a superstar programmer yet like I said, my coding skills have come a long way. That’s what I do. I’m a web designer developer now. We build sites that are huge websites.
For big five and six figure clients’ matter of fact, it just was talking about with someone about doing a quote today for a site that would be upwards of 50 or $60,000. That’s a quote that we’re working on. The thing is, is you don’t have to have all of these things buttoned up in order to start and build your business.
So what I’ve been working on and what I’ve been doing is starting to build a training course where I’m taking all of this stuff and I’m putting it all together. I am wrapping it all together into a program that I’m going to be teaching about the business side of web development.
Before I do that, one of the things that I want to do and I mentioned this on Facebook the other day, too, if you’re interested, definitely hit me up and let me know because I’m going to be doing a live training. This is going to cover the things that I’ve learned and how to do things in my web design and development business that has absolutely revolutionized the way that I do things in my business now that have sped up my projects, that have made my business profitable because there have been seen times and situations where what should have been like a 30 day project ends up going 90 days or more.
By the time I was done with it, I ended up calculating all the hours that I put into it. I was making less than minimum wage. These stuff was ridiculous. Anyway, if this is something that is interesting to you, that you’d be interested in getting help with, definitely let me know. Hit me up.
I’ve got a live training that I’m working on putting together so if I get enough people that are interested in doing it, I’m going to give it to everybody for free. So if you want to take a look at that just let me know.
Anyway, like I said, I just wanted to dispel this myth today. I wanted to put it out there. If you have been struggling with your technical skills and abilities and you want to build a web design and development business, you do not have to be a superstar programmer in order to do this.
That’s what I’ve got for you guys today. Like I said, if you’ve got any questions, hit me up in the comments below. Hit me up and let me know what you’re thinking.
If you’re interested in that live training, definitely leave me a comment because I want to make sure that I can let you know when that’s going to happen if I get enough people that are interested in it. That’s what I got for today, guys. You guys take care. Until next time, bye.
