Email List Building | Resources to Start With Email Marketing

Adventures In Digital Marketing Episode 49

Since we’re talking about digital marketing adventures I wanted to talk to you about things I’ve been working on lately, one of which has been email marketing. There is so much to learn if you’re going to do it right, and according to experts who know, there is great financial reward that can be the result of truly delivering value to your list. So that’s what we’re talking about in this episode – what I’m doing, where I’m at and two critical resources that I couldn’t do without!

Email Marketing Challenges

Welcome back to Adventures in Digital marketing. I am Rob Orr. I am your host. This morning, I am wanting to talk about the stuff that I’ve been working on lately. I’ve been talking about WordPress Challenge and Seven Pillars of Digital Marketing and all that sort of stuff.

What I wanted to do here in this episode is kind of take you behind the scenes of what I’m doing to try to build my community and build my audience and help extend my reach. Let’s jump into it.

The big thing right now for me has been working on creative work and if you are doing business online in any way, you’ll know that the actual creation of funnels and products and services and websites and all that sort of stuff is kind of the unspoken reality.

A lot of times you hear about how easy it is to do this, or do you do that? Or hey, you just need a soap opera sequence or those kinds of things. You don’t always understand all that’s involved or how hard that can actually be to do. A lot of times that gets glossed over. At least it seems that way to me.

Because that’s really where the money is made more than anything else. Because that’s where the creative work really needs to find its fullest expression. It needs to be done well.

You can’t just throw anything out there and expect it to work unless you enjoy the same kind of odds that you get when you play the lottery. You just throw something up there and hope that it works.

The Digital Marketing Experiment

Anyway, so I’m trying to be really deliberate. I’m the kind of person that is very invested in trying to learn as much as I can to make thoughtful and intelligent steps forward when I’m working on something. I’ve been working on building up my list and communicating with my list, probably more than anything.

I’ve got lead magnets that are out there. I’ve got the WordPress checklist, which is always done really well. Then I’ve got the free digital copy of the ultimate WordPress blueprint, which is also done really well.

It’s allowed me to get my list to just under 1000 subscribers. I’m right at that thousand subscribers milestone. Hopefully here before too much longer I will pass that.

My thing is I’ve got to be better at talking to the people on my list and communicating things of value because one of the things that keeps coming back to my mind, it’s one of the things that Russell Brunson teaches. It’s not just Russell.

Being Curious and Getting Better

Lots of online marketers that are doing business online. I talked about that you should be making roughly on average $1 per name on your list per month. That’s kind of as a benchmark.

That’s kind of like the floor like the way that Russell describes it and the reason it comes to mind for me is, he says, if you’re doing it poorly then you should be making $1 per month per name on your list.

Well, I’m obviously doing it poorly and not only poorly but exceptionally poorly because right now my list isn’t really generating much in the way of income. That’s okay. I’m not really so worried about that because I know I’ve got a lot to learn and communicating well with my list.

Here’s a couple things that I’ve been doing that have been really, really helpful. There’s two people that I have followed that I got onto their list. I read their emails all the time because they’re really freaking awesome.

Email Marketing Legends

One is André Chaperon and Ben Settle. Those two guys have helped me to learn a ton about creating and writing and creating good email. Right now, I’m working on a new soap opera sequence for my Seven Pillars series.

I’ve been working on that over the last several days. One of the things that I’ve done is, I’ve gone through the autoresponder madness course that André Chaperon has now started offering for free.

I wasn’t really sure about pulling the trigger on the paid course yet because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to invest the time and the effort to be able to do it well.  I didn’t do that, but he started offering autoresponder madness too for free. I was immediately hooked from the very beginning.

I just finished that sequence a couple months back and– as you may well know, I do this podcast when I’m in my car on the way to the office in the morning. We got lots of fire trucks and ambulances that are making their way through here. It makes it very difficult to concentrate and pay attention.

Anyway, I hope everybody is okay there and nothing too bad is going on. Anyway, Andre’s autoresponder course has been really helpful to me because it’s delivered via email. He rolls it out as a soap opera sequence of its own kind.

Commanding Attention

If you’re not familiar with soap opera sequences then Russell touches on it. In his works Expert Secrets, I believe it may also be in DotCom Secrets, but it’s a sequence where you are telling a story over a period of time where in a so proper like fashion, you are creating open loops and teasers for things to come.

You are then able to hook people into reading the series and paying attention. That’s really what I’ve been working on is writing those emails and it’s challenging, but I’m excited about what’s going to happen there because the Seven Pillars stuff, I think it’s going to be really, really helpful when it’s delivered in that kind of format.

Then there is Ben Settle who is another authority in the email space. Actually was supposed to be speaking at funnel hacking live, but I found out through his list that he had actually declined and turned Russell down to speak at funnel hacking live this year for whatever reasons they may be which is fine.

I mean, he can do what he wants, but his emails are awesome. The big thing that I’ve learned from him is the consistency of doing emails every single day. Sending something valuable, sending something and talking to people every single day on your list.

Do It Right

Then obviously you want to do it well. You want to have stuff of value that you can deliver. That’s really the big thing for me that I’ve been working on.

I’ll have a new lead magnet that I’ll be working on that will roll out also with that Seven Pillars series. So got a lot of creative work to do to kind of sum it all up. There’s a lot of work that has to be done because I’ve already got sequences for both of the lead magnets that I mentioned before and they do well.

I regularly get new subscribers through that, but I want to make them better. I just want to challenge you, if this is something that is new to you. Two things you need to pick up Expert Secrets and study that book from cover to cover.

Expert Secrets – Worth Investing The Time

Then read it over and over again. I can’t count the number of times that I had been through that book either on audio book or reading the physical copy because I’ve got the digital. I’ve got a physical copy of it in my office. I’ve got it on audio book as well.

I just keep going back through that book because there’s just so much amazing stuff there.

If there is something that is new to you or this whole concept of soap opera sequences and email communication is new, I would challenge you to get into that book and really dig in and listen and study and highlight. Just do everything you can to learn the stuff that’s in that book because this is especially I think something that is relevant for bloggers.

If you’re a blogger, and you’re trying to move the needle, like yesterday, we talked about in my Facebook Live the second of the Seven Pillars, which is great content and publishing all of the time. Getting your email game down is such a huge factor.

You have to really dig in and make that an awesome aspect of your business. Because if you’re just kind of dabbling with it, nobody’s listening. Anyway, that’s what I wanted to talk about today. That’s what I’m working on.

I’ll let you know how it goes. I’ll let you know when that part of my emails is ready to roll out.  I’d love for you to see it. There’s going to be lots of valuable stuff in there so I’m excited about it. If it’s something that’s a good fit for you, I really think it’s going to be helpful. I would love for you to be able to see that.

Anyway, today is Friday. I hope you guys have a great weekend. I will be on Facebook live tomorrow. I would love to have you come and be part of that.

My group on Facebook is called Digital Marketing Mastery. You can find that by going to DigitalMarketingMasteryhq.com. It’s a free group to join. It is a group of likeminded people, entrepreneurs, bloggers, marketers, online business people who are working hard to build their online business.

We would love to have you join. We’d love to see you on the Facebook live tomorrow as we kind of recap some stuff that’s going on and what’s coming up next. That’s all I’ve got for today.

You guys, I hope you have a great Friday. It’s raining and nasty here in Tallahassee so hopefully things will clear up. Anyway, you guys take care. We’ll talk to you later. Bye.
