Funnel Hacking Live Nashville 2020 – My Initial Thoughts

Adventures In Digital Marketing Episode 51

Just got back from my trip to Nashville for Funnel Hacking Live 2020 and I’m back in to the routine of daily life and in this morning’s episode, I’m covering my intial thoughts and feelings after having some time to digest and decompress from the trip.

There was so much great stuff – and I learned a ton!

FHL 2020 put all the pieces of the puzzle into place for me.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, how I would react, who I’d meet, or what I’d think by the end of it.

But I have to say it’s the best money I’ve *invested* in a long time.

I’m not a fanboy – not one to get overly impressed by other people who have huge names and have had great success.

I will say that I lost my cool a little seeing Russell Brunson on stage in person for the first time.

And Steve J Larsen too.

Not because I’m a fanboy. But because I’m thoroughly impressed by the men that these guys are.

I’m inspired by their authenticity.

I’m inspired by what they’ve built of course, but what they’ve built is the result of the men they are.

It’s the caliber of *human being* that those two guys are that inspires me the most.

I met some amazing people at the conference and I appreciate every one of you who took time to spend some time talking with me. So many others that I wanted to connect with, but unfortunately, it just didn’t happen (but there is always next year!)

I wasn’t sure if it was all going to be too much. If one has never been exposed to any of this teaching, then surely it would be like drinking from the fire hose.

But for me, it wasn’t that at all.

It was the level of depth, and reinforcement of stuff I’d already been exposed to that made the biggest impression.

I’ve been obsessed with 80/20 principle for a while now. I knew going into this conference that there was going to be 20% of what was presented that was going to make all the difference for me, so I was diligently searching for that 20% the whole time.

I learned from every session, no doubt. But in some of the sessions there were “aha!” moments that were mind-blowing revelations.

I told my wife on Sunday morning – I learned what I needed to learn.

A couple sessions validated some of my ideas in ways that were completely unexpected.

Thanks to Katheryn Jones, AJ Rivera, and Mike Schmidt for some great insights for what I need to do — you helped me more than you know!

I see a very clear path for the next steps I need to take for what I need to do for my business.

I see the things I need to improve on, where I need to implement new systems, and tweak things.

Tony Robbins mentioned that repetition is the key to mastery and that’s exactly what FHL 2020 was for me – more exposure – more repetition – deeper dives into the material and taking the next steps towards mastery.

So now that it’s all over and I’m home. I’m not exhausted.

I’m inspired, but not hyped up.

I get it now.

I’m focused, determined and committed.

And I can’t wait to get started!

Was Funnel Hacking Live Worth It?

Welcome back to Adventures in Digital Marketing everybody. I am Rob Orr. I am your host. Today is Monday, the first Monday after Funnel Hacking Live 2020. It was an incredible trip. It was an amazing conference.

Got to meet a ton of great people and learned a ton of stuff, but my perspective on this getting back is a little bit different than what I thought it would be. I’ll tell you more about that here in in just a little bit. Let me give you the backstory.

The big thing for me is as you know, I’m a web developer and I first encountered Russell stuff a while ago. I’m trying to figure out because so many times over the course of the last several days, I’ve talked a lot about—was a lot of people about how I got here. I even did a Facebook Live on this I believe on Saturday morning or Friday morning, one or the other.

DotCom Secrets – Dipping My Toe In the Water

I originally encountered Russell Brunson really kind of by accident. The, the way it goes is I bought DotCom Secrets and never really spent a lot of time in it the first time through it. For whatever reason where I was at the time. It didn’t really catch my attention.

I bought it probably around the time that it came out, but you know how those things go. Sometimes you buy a book and you try to start reading, it doesn’t really move you that much. You just put it on the shelf and come back to it later. Fast forward, a few months until I got a new retainer client for my business.

They had brought me on to do web design and development for their coaching business. This was in the very early days of ClickFunnels. I was completely foreign to the idea of funnels at this time. I didn’t know anything about it.

Online Sales Funnels

I knew about sales funnels because if you’ve listened to this podcast, you know that after I graduated from Florida State, I spent time working in sales for several years before I transition to doing web design and development. I figured out how to do all this stuff anyway. I built my business and I had this retainer client, they’re like, “We need to build out this sales funnel.”

Here are the things that we want to be able to do. Here’s what the membership area we want to look like. Here are the pages that we want to have and all of these things. Here’s what we wanted to do at each step. It really piqued my curiosity.

Now, the thing was with that client, unfortunately for them, they never really did real well with their funnels. I wasn’t their funnel guy, obviously. I don’t know what the breakdown was.

However, the big thing for me was I was intrigued by this idea of sales funnels. So I started poking around and I went in and I reread .com secrets again. It was one of those things I’m like, “Hey, this makes an awful lot of sense.”

Three Kinds of Traffic

Because one of the first parts of the book is talking about traffic and cold traffic and warm traffic and hot traffic and what the messaging looks like for each of those groups. It really caught my attention this time around because I had something more specifically that I could apply to what I was learning from the stuff that Russell teaches in .com secrets.

We built out this whole thing, and as I mentioned as the early days of Click Funnels, the interface was a lot clunkier than it is now. They’ve really come a long way and how well this platform performs across the board.

As a web developer, I like to be in control in the fact that I couldn’t be in control really was very challenging for me to say the least. We ended up building out the funnel in WooCommerce and WordPress because we had more control over the functionality.

We had more control over the functionality. We had control over all of the various things that we wanted to have control over. It worked really well. Anyway, I got hooked at this time into the stuff that Russell was teaching. So I started digging in deeper to these things.

Hook, Story, Offer

Because again, I’ve been fascinated with marketing since the earliest days of my interest in the internet, really. I was very intrigued by what Russell was doing. Russell is an amazing storyteller. So I started digging in and before I knew it, I was drinking the Kool Aid. I was all in on what I was learning from Russell and the ClickFunnels team and people associated with ClickFunnels like Steve Larsen and Julie Stoian and several others that are in the ClickFunnels community.

Anyway, fast forward now to where we are. Last year I was kicking around the idea about going, but I didn’t ultimately pull the trigger. I’m like, “I don’t know if I can justify this expense and this time off from work and being away from my family and struggling through all of that.”

One Funnel Away Challenge

But that is even after I had done the One Funnel Away Challenge and I was starting to make some traction. Because conferences I’ve been to, I haven’t been to a lot. It was a little bit intimidated by that whole concept. So, last year was big year for me, a big learning year.

At the end of the year, I realized for me, for myself, I still had so much that I need to learn. Last year was also a year of me putting Expert Secrets on loop. When I say on loop, I mean that almost literally because I’ve got it on audio book. I’ve got it on digital. I’ve got it in a physical copy.

I had been through Expert Secrets many times. I would listen to while I was out walking. I’ve read it and dog eared the book and all that stuff as well. I’m like, “Man, I really need to take this stuff to the next level.”

One of the things that’s always been kind of in the back of the mind is and it’s probably a Tony Robbins saying, “Your net worth is your network.”  I realized that my network wasn’t really anywhere near as strong as it should be in order for me to be going to the places that I wanted to go to.

Funnel Hacking Live

The promotion started for Funnel Hacking live for 2020. In December, I decided to pull the trigger. At first I was a little bit intimidated by committing to that much money because it’s big chunk of change. The tickets, your room, your food, the travel, all of that easily is $2,000 or $3,000 at the least. But I decided, you know what I’m doing all in and if I’m going to do this, I’m not going to dabble.

I’m not going to just kind of be dipping my toe in the water. It’s time for me to finally take the plunge and go all the way. That’s how I ended up at Funnel Hacking live over the last several days. I made the commitment in December that I was going to do it.

Then I was going to work on expanding my network and meeting people and learning and growing and that’s really what it was. It was an absolutely amazing experience. It was better than I thought it would be. Sometimes you think about these events and you’re like, “What’s it going to be like? I mean, what am I going to be like afterwards?”

I don’t want to be necessarily filled with a bunch of hype and a bunch of excitement that’s just going to go away a couple days after I get home.  To be honest, I really don’t feel that way at all. I don’t feel like I’m hyped. I don’t feel like I am over excited which like I said it can be the way some people come home from these conferences. It really for me is I’m determined.

I learned what I needed to learn

I told my wife yesterday morning when we were sitting there talking about what we were going to be working on for the day and family stuff, and talking a little bit about the conference. I told her, I said, “You know, I feel like I learned what I needed to learn.”

I’m a big 80/20 person. So I’m always looking to see if I can identify that 20% that’s going to be the thing that’s going to really move the needle for me in all the areas of my life. I’m getting better at looking for that kind of stuff. There were a couple.

I’ll tell you about it in future episodes, what were the real big takeaways for me. There’s going to be a full review of Funnel Hacking Live. I’m going to do a video on that for YouTube. There will be a few other episodes for the podcast and Facebook Live about all these things.

We’ll come back to that. For me, I’m focused. I feel like in some new ways, I feel like the pieces of the puzzle have fallen into place for me. I have really dialed in on what I believe I need to do for the next steps.

I’m not trying to take something from every single word that was said and trying to cram it. I’m focusing in on that 20% that I believe is going to make all the difference for me for my next step.

Anyway, I’m excited to tell you guys more about that in future episodes. I wanted to just give you a quick recap about how I ended up there and what my experience was like and what kind of the main thing for me was.

That really was, like I said, I learned what I needed to learn. I met some great people. I made some great connections and got to meet people that I’ve been interacting with online for a while. Actually being able to shake a lot of people’s heads was awesome.

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got for today. Like always, I hope you guys are doing awesome. Thank you for tuning into this podcast. I really appreciate that. I would appreciate it even more if you would subscribe on iTunes.
