Isn’t it weird to see yourself on camera? Kinda makes you feel self-conscious and uncomfortable? Yea, me too. But I did it anyway because I’m a firm believer in being able to see the person who’s behind all they create.

So here’s to starting up with some video stuff too.

If you don’t know me by now, even though this is my blog, please allow me to introduce myself.

In this video I wanted to be able to give you a little background on who I am and what I do. I’m covering a little about my background and how I came to learn about online business – for real – for the first time.


Hey everyone, my name is Rob Orr and I am a web designer and developer. I wanted to create this video to introduce myself.
You might be able to put a name to a face or to a voice if you’ve heard my podcast. If you’ve seen my blog, run into the end the content that you may have encountered there.

To kind of give you a quick back story, I’ve recently started a podcast called Adventures in Digital Marketing. The idea behind this video in that podcast is to document everything that I’m doing so that you can look over my shoulder as I try to build things and do things in online business.

You can learn from my mistakes and hopefully, you will be able to repeat the successes that I have for you and for your business. That’s really kind of the whole thing behind this. I definitely encourage you to follow along, subscribe to this YouTube channel, subscribe to my blog, and my podcast that you can find at my blog.

I would really appreciate that. I think it is something that will be very helpful because if you’re anything like me it’s always encouraging to be able to take a look over the shoulder of somebody else that’s doing something that you’re trying to do and getting results.

One of the biggest struggles I think that I see at least for myself and things that I see with the clients that I work with on the web design side is that sometimes people that you’re trying to imitate are so far down the road and so far ahead of you that it’s kind of hard to figure out how you fit into that scenario.

Because you’ll hear maybe their podcast, or you’ll see one of their videos and they’ll be talking about how they were able to accomplish something. That was on YouTube in 2011 and we all know that YouTube is a completely different animal now in 2019 than it was way back when.

It makes this disconnect and then you see how successful they are and they spent all these years building all this stuff. It’s, it’s kind of hard to relate. So my goal is to walk alongside you is I’m trying to do these things for myself so that you can see what’s working now, what’s not working now, where I’m making mistakes, where I’m having success so that you can be able to participate in it.

And avoid some of the mistakes that I make and enjoy some of the successes that I’m having right now. That’s kind of the idea behind this video and behind what I’m trying to accomplish here. To give you a little bit of background on who I am and what I do.

Like I said, I’m a web designer and developer and I got started doing web design back when my daughter was a baby. She had just been born.
As many a new parent can testify to is that’s a very exciting time, but it’s also a terrifying time at the same time because you’re super excited about being a new dad or new mom. At the same time, I’ve been entrusted with this life that I have to take care now.

That is a humbling experience to say the least. And when I got started doing this stuff, I graduated from Florida State and I got a degree in psychology. I had been working in sales for a long time.

I hated it. I hated all of the crazy expectations. I hated all of the ridiculous stuff, the hoops that we had to jump through, the reports that we had to create.

There was one time where I was working for this company and for those that fell within a certain spectrum of where they were at with their sales numbers, they had to be on a conference call with everybody else that was in that same range and their sales manager—it’s six o’clock in the morning, most ridiculous thing I’ve ever been a part of in my entire life.

That was kind of the thing that sealed the deal for me that I didn’t want to do this anymore. So I took what had been up until that point a hobby which was learning how to dabble in web design and development, learning a little bit of HTML here, a little bit of CSS here, a little action script and JavaScript here.

I started putting things together and so I literally taught myself how to do web design and development. As I got better at doing that, I started making a little bit of extra money for my family being able to help people with their websites because that was the thing, right?

I mean the most important thing to me was that I needed to be able to take care of my young family, take care of my daughter, take care of my wife, and try to give us some financial breathing room. I don’t know about you, if you’ve ever been in that situation or not, but for me that was like a must-have as far as life goes.

I had to be able to try to figure out a way to build in some financial margin into our life there. But the internal struggle that I was having was a feeling like it was really hard for me to as a dad and not knowing how to make this money because I was in a salary based job.

Yeah, we had commissions and bonuses and those kinds of things, but the thing was is that it was really a struggle because I was tired of feeling broke. This is before I started my web design gig.

I was tired of feeling broke. I was tired of feeling anchored into a J-O-B as Dan Miller likes to call it on the 48 Days to the Work you Love website. I was tired of struggling trying to pay my bills. I don’t know if you can relate to that, but that was the thing for me.

It was super freaking hard. I was a new dad. I was in a young marriage. We were young and life was hard.

Anyway, so that was kind of the struggles that I was dealing with there. Like I said, I really wanted to be able to support my family. So I started learning how to do this web design and development stuff.

I started to be able to help people do their sites. It was really awesome, but the problem that I ran into was there weren’t a lot of resources out there like there are now like you couldn’t go to YouTube when I was getting started and find all these different kinds of things that you can learn how to do on YouTube.

I mean, you can learn how to bake, you can learn how to do just about anything that you can possibly imagine on YouTube now. That was not the case back then. The resources that I was looking for were few and far between.

t was really hard to do some of that stuff especially when you’re trying to teach yourself. Eventually though, what I did have some success with is I was trying to learn ActionScript and ActionScript is part of Flash which is no longer a real tool anymore because nobody uses it.
It kind of acts and behaves in a similar way that JavaScript does. I was trying to learn this and because I was trying to build a website and flash. I stumbled upon a course where this guy was teaching people how to do ActionScript.

It was like, I heard the angel singing and the lights came on and the light shone down from heaven. It all finally started making sense for me. I was super excited because I could finally now be able to do the things that I was trying to do with my website.

It was a lot of time and it was a lot of work. What happened next after that was I thought, wouldn’t it be great for people that are trying to get started online and trying to overcome these hurdles that come with web technology?

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a resource like I got in that old ActionScript course where I could help people overcome the hurdles that I had been facing all along and all the stuff that I had been trying to do. I thought that would be a really cool idea so that’s what I’ve done.

I’ve created this solution that is going to help people to get there to do be able to get online fast. So what I would do is I would be able to teach people how to do it themselves and accelerate their timeline and not get stuck because one of the things that I had been doing for the longest time— when I started helping people with their websites, I started doing all custom web design and development work.

There’s a time and a place for that, but if you’re just getting started with your website that is not what you need out of the gate. You don’t need to spend a bunch of money on a custom website because number one you don’t have any traffic. Number two, there’s just no need it’s not a good investment to spend all that money when you’re just getting started.

There’s a basic set of tools that you need to have on every web project so that you can build what you were trying to build. You see what happened is I would have ended up on these calls with these clients.

It had just happened to many times. We would be doing our opening kickoff kind of exploration call so we can figure out how we might be able to help them do what they wanted to do, but then we started talking about budgets and timelines and those kinds of things.

It was really hard for them to afford that kind of stuff because a basic website that we would do that would be custom-built would start at 3000 dollars and go up from there depending on design requirements, custom features, and custom functionality those kinds of things.
It would immediately blew those people out of the water that we’re trying to just get started with stuff, budgets for custom websites aren’t cheap especially if you’re getting started is the bottom line. Like I said, the average cost for a custom website started around ,000.

It would take four to six weeks to build if we were luck, and everybody did their homework right and got everything buttoned up. I ended up being so frustrated at not being able to help those peoples that I ended up deciding to create my own solution that was specifically designed just for them.

This solution would make it super easy for them to get started with their own professional WordPress site in a fraction of the time and a fraction of the cost. So I put something together that would really in half a day I could build something for them that would serve all of their needs.

All of the basics would be in place for everything that they needed. I put together a solution for them that would give them everything that they needed. It would give them all of the framework that they needed to have.

It would look amazing. It would be a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the time. So what used to take four to six weeks and $3,000 or more would take a couple of hours and cost a fraction of what it would cost normally. It would accelerate them.

It was literally like putting them in a rocket ship and they would just explode out of the gates with everything they need. Then they would be able to focus in on shipping their own art and being able to do what they need to do.

And ultimately since I created this, it’s called WP Launch. If you go to you can find out more information about it there. The whole idea was to give this tool to these people so they can be able to accelerate and do their thing right out of the gate without getting bogged down in the technical details.

Since that time, I’ve been able to expand that. I’ve helped a ton of people get started with their website. I’ve been able to help tons of people focus on shipping their art.

It’s generated more than six figures and additional income from my family has helped us pay down debt and help us be put onto the road to finally being able to get some financial breathing room in our life which again if you’re anything like me, is a really big freaking deal.
We all need a little bit of flexibility and this has done that. The most important thing though it has really helped people accelerate what they’re trying to do online.

They’re not on their own. They’ve got me. They’ve got my team. We’re able to help them do what they need to do with the technical aspects of it and ultimately help them to grow and ship their art.
