Opportunity Costs and Finding the “Who” and not the “How”

Adventures In Digital Marketing Episode 21

Everyone knows that being able to find someone you can pay to help you get stuff done speeds up everything. But what do you do when your budget is screaming and you just can’t pull the trigger to pay someone to do it? You roll up your sleeves and do it yourself. It’s what I’ve been doing for a long time, but I’ve also been able to leverage my team to do some of the work and in this episode, I talk about how all works.

Opportunity costs & weighing your options

Hey, welcome back everybody. This is Rob Orr. Welcome back to The Adventures in Digital Marketing Podcast. I wanted to catch you guys up on just a few things that are going on and talk about a couple different things that have been on my mind over the last week or so. Last week, it’s been kind of tough.

I’ve been dealing with some health issues that have made things a little bit challenging, but I’ve been fighting through it and feeling much better now. Another big thing that’s been going on is as I’ve talked to you guys about before, I finished the WordPress blueprint. I can’t even talk.

The WordPress blueprint book and that book is done. It’s ready to go and I’m really excited about it. I’ve been working on building the funnel for that. I’m pretty much done with that. Hopefully that will be going live today or tomorrow. You’ll be able to get your hands on that.

I’m really excited about getting that to you. One of the things that I’ve been doing is creating a couple of videos for the sales page. I’ve started doing YouTube videos and just learning about videos in general. It’s been really cool. I really have found that I enjoy doing the videos more from the production side than from the actual recording side.

It’s been fun as I get used to doing something new. My YouTube channel is starting to grow ever so modestly as I get started with doing my videos there. I got the podcast here and then as always, I’ve got my blog and stuff like that.

There’s always ways to see what’s going on in getting content but the big thing for me lately that I’ve been working on is been getting the funnel done for the for the WordPress blueprint book. The great thing, if you’re interested in that book is that at least for now you’re going to be able to get a copy of that completely free.

You’ll be able to use a digital version of that and be able to download that at my funnel. I think the URL for that is https://wpwebsiteblueprint.com/ I believe is what I chose for the URL there. https://wpwebsiteblueprint.com/. Yeah, that sounds right.

That’s exciting and I’m excited to see what the book can offer. My first lead magnet that I created was my WordPress checklist. That’s going to be part of a bundle that’s available through the funnel as well. I was so stoked about how well that particular lead magnet did.

It was my first really big push on doing a lead magnet. I had dabbled with some stuff before on some checklists and stuff like that. But, a while back, I’d caught inspiration about creating a checklist for folks that are trying to get started with their WordPress website.

I figured why not put something together that would be comprehensive that we give them all the steps. I’m like, “Wouldn’t it be great if there was just a comprehensive checklist that had everything on it that you needed?” That’s what I built.

That really is what led to the WordPress blueprint book. It is what led to the website content blueprint book that is something that I’m also working on that will be part of this.

The whole thing for me is I’m trying to create some resources around what people need to get started with their websites because for me you see a lot of people and maybe it’s not as much as it used to be or maybe I just don’t see it as much anymore, but lots of people to build their affiliate income would promote Bluehost.

They would talk about how great Bluehost is and how easy it is to get started with a WordPress website by signing up with Bluehost and then going through their auto install features that have and just being done with it in like 10 minutes. I’m like, “That’s great, but most people don’t know what to do next.”

My guess is that the vast majority of people don’t know what to do next. They’re guessing about, “Oh, well I guess I need to get a theme. I guess I need to create some product or get some plugins. I need to have this to be able to start building my list.”

It kind of aggravated me to be honest, big influencers are promoting this hosting service, but they’re not really doing anything beyond telling you how you can use the service to install WordPress. I’m like, “That doesn’t really help a lot of people.”

It doesn’t help people that are really serious about trying to get started with our website. I’m sure there are probably lots of people that actually did well because there are lots and lots of very high profile influencers that are promoting Bluehost. For me, I’m like, “What about what happens when you get done with that? What happens when you finish the 20 minute or 15 minute or 10 minute or whatever install process? What are you going to do next?”

What are the next steps because the ones that I’ve seen and I could be wrong, but for the most of the ones that I’ve seen, they don’t talk about anything about how to use widgets. They don’t talk about how to use pages and how to do posts and what the various different pieces are that make of what WordPress really is.

That was really something that’s been sticking with me for a long time. It was frustrating to me when I was first getting started because I couldn’t find resources anywhere. YouTube was still on the horizon. I think when I first started doing web development either YouTube was really, really young or hadn’t even been founded yet when I first started to learn how to do web development.

I remember how frustrating that was. It was crazy. I think I’ve talked about it before, I would go to Borders bookstore and I would buy these big, huge, thick programming books so I could teach myself programming. When at the end of the day, all I really wanted was a website that had some content management features and functionality.

I remember I’ve registered one of my first domains with GoDaddy. I’m on support with GoDaddy. I’m talking to them and I’m like, “Well, I want to be able to have this website where I can log in and I can manage it.”

The person that I was talking to had no idea what I was talking about. I was in a very, very crude way trying to describe a content management system. They didn’t have a clue. It was frustrating for me to again go back to the drawing board.

Google was always the ever-present and capable search engine to find results. I got back to searching and finding stuff and I found a course on Flash. I found a course on ASP.NET. I started dabbling with those things. It took forever to do what I was trying to do. It was not what I wanted and so I ended up frustrated.
All that to say, I get it when people get frustrated when they’re trying to start a website and they’re not trying to get a computer science degree. They’re not trying to learn how to be a programmer. They just want to have a website where they can publish their content.

I call it “shipping their art” where they put their message out. They’re telling their story. They’re starting their online business. They are doing something that is productive.

They’re doing it online and they don’t want to do it. They don’t want to have a computer science degree to have to do that. That was really kind of the idea behind my WordPress blueprint book is what do you do when WordPress is done and you’re ready to take the next steps to build your own self hosted WordPress site into something that you can be proud of, something that is useful, something that will help you do what you want to do online, but you don’t have a lot of tech skills. That was really the motivation.

Anyway, that’s what I’ve been working on. I created the book version of it which is the transcripts from the video course. Then the videos obviously along with the companion notebook where I’ve got all of that various different stuff. That stuff is all just about ready to go.

It’s exciting and like I said, it’ll be available here hopefully today or tomorrow as I finished working through the last few steps there. One of the things also that has been a big challenge is, one of the concepts is that Russell Brunson talks about find the “who” not the how.

Basically what he means by that is in order to accelerate your progress, you want to find resources where you can hire somebody to do the things that you need to have done to take the next step down the path of whatever road you’re doing instead of trying to figure it all out yourself. Because if you tried to figure it all out yourself, you’re going to get bogged down in all of the learning and that’s going to slow you down from your go.

But, if you’re like most of us, there’s not a ton of money out there to throw at the problem. If you need for instance, I mentioned earlier I’ve been learning a lot about video. I don’t right now have the funds to spend on doing video production. I bought a couple things here and there to enhance my videos like some lower third cards that show my social media icons and stuff like that on how to get connected with me.

I drop those into my videos myself. I don’t send out my whole video to somebody else to do it because I can’t afford it. That I think is the entrepreneur’s dilemma, right when you are first getting started. It’s a big challenge.

My recommendation I guess is that when you can find the “who” definitely take those opportunities to do that. Pay someone to do the tricky, complex thing that you need done so you can keep moving. If you can’t afford to pay some money, remember why you’re doing what you’re doing and push through and learn the how. Because at the end of the day, sometimes that’s just the way it is.

Sometimes you just have to learn how to do what it is that needs to be done in order for you to take the next step and your progress as an online entrepreneur or a digital marketer. That’s really what it’s been for me.

I’ve learned how to figure out how to do the self-publishing of my book. I did hire somebody to help me with the copy and the transcripts and placing all of my screenshots and that stuff, but I also got guys on my team now that helps with that.

That was where I was able to utilize some of the who concept where I find leaning on the who, but as far as actually doing the book– in finding a vendor, in finding the different things that I wanted to be able to do, that was all me. I designed the cover. I designed the back cover.

I’ve worked with my graphic artists who did the page layout and InDesign to get all that stuff ready to go. Like I said, I’m learning podcasting again and learning how to do the videos and sometimes like I said the “how” is just the baseline entry fee into doing this business online.

Don’t be discouraged by that just be determined because I know that is what it’s been for me. It’s not easy. None of this stuff is easy. Sometimes I think people get very excited about the potential and they realize the amount of work that goes into product creation and content creation and they get blown away.
I know for me at least, it’s been challenging, but I persist because I believe in what I’m trying to do because my thing and I was talking with somebody on Facebook about this last night. My thing is I want to help as many people as I can help to start their own online business and their own digital journey and start earning money online so that they can escape the bonds of a traditional job.

Because all of us are at the mercy of those of us who have a traditional job. We’re dependent on that. There’s nothing wrong with that, but there are those of us who are looking for more. There are those of us who are really wanting to break into the next level and pursue financial independence so that you don’t have to be dependent on your traditional job for the income to take care of your family.

Those are the people that I am really looking to help. Those people that can start and build an online business and do great things. My original inspiration for this was back when I was a sales representative long before I became a web developer and I would see these people that are running these businesses out of their houses. I was just floored by how successful some of these people were be.
That’s all I’ve got for today. I hope that this encourages you. I hope that you are as excited as I am about the possibility of getting the WordPress Blueprint book. You’ll be able to get that at https://wpwebsiteblueprint.com/.

Looking forward to seeing how that goes. Like I said, that funnel will be up soon so that you’ll be able to get your hands on that book and get yourself a hard copy. Then there are some really cool bonuses that are available with that.

That’s all I’ve got for today. I hope you guys are doing great. Until next time, we’ll talk soon.
