Why Is Site Load-time Speed Important?
Your site loading slow and now you don’t know what to do. Everybody’s frustrated and it’s taking forever for the pages on your site to load. Well, stick around. I’ve got three quick tips for you today to increase your site speed. Let’s go!
Welcome back everybody. My name is Rob Orr. I’m a web designer and developer. I am focused on helping creators do business better online. That means I am here to solve your tech headaches. I am here to help you to figure out the tools, the resources that you need in order for you to do business better online.
Today marks the first day and a new series that I’m creating called Quick Tips Tuesday. What that is, it’s a resource for you to get really quick and actionable tips that you can put into action fast so that you can focus in on what you’re trying to do with your blog or your business and do better stuff online.
With that being said, we’re going to go ahead and jump in. What I want to talk about today is three quick things that you can look at that can increase your site speed. Let’s jump in.
Your Hosting Service Sucks
Number one, the biggest problem that most people have with their website is their hosting service sucks. I’m kind of sorry, not really sorry to say that, but in most instances, people with slow websites, their hosting service sucks.
It’s because they originally signed up through that one main affiliate that’s out there. They bought into this really crappy oversold shared hosting plan. That is really only good if you’re trying to share recipes with your kids or your family or something like that.
What I want you to do is look at upgrading your service to something that is going to be better. It’s going to be faster. It’s going to have greater capacity and greater resources for your website so that your website can actually do what it was built to do.
Because your website wants to be fast, you just have to give it the resources that it needs to have to be fast. What you want to do is look for a host where maybe you can sign up for a virtual private server plan, or upgrade your hosting to the next level so that you have a greater amount of resources available to you so that you can get your site moving quickly.
Poorly Built Theme & Too Many Plugins
Number one, the biggest problem that most people have with their website is that their hosting service sucks. Get a really good hosting service. Number two, we’re going to talk about is your theme in your plugins. What I see is, a lot of times people are always searching for free themes.
I’m not real sure why we are so hung up on free when it’s just like 100 bucks to get a really well-built theme. Rant aside, what you need to do is to make sure that you have a theme that is put together well. That is coded well.
So if you’re going to do it free themes, stick with the theme that comes with WordPress out of the box, or go the premium route and get a StudioPress theme. These are really well built things and they’re built to be fast. They’re built to be search engine optimized, meaning that the coding that underlies your website is really well done.
It’s really well put together. You want to make sure that you’ve got a good theme in place. Also, the number of plugins that you use. A lot of times you have people that are adding in plugins where like they’re adding a popover or something like that or some kind of social media embed or all these kinds of things.
All of those plugins that you are adding to your site are consuming the server resources and they take longer to load. What you want to make sure that you’re doing is use only those that you really absolutely have to have and then trimming back on everything that you don’t. Popovers you have their moments and there are lots of people that are still using them and I get it. Everybody wants to build their list.
Everybody wants to put the exit intent pop-up there so that you can keep people from leaving your site. Hopefully, get them to stay or to opt-in or those kinds of things. I totally understand that, but do it in a way where you optimize that process so that your page loads as fast as possible.
You’re Not Using Page Caching
So that when they actually do get the page to load, they do want to stick around. Does that make sense? Finally, number three that we’re going to talk about here on this list of places that you can look to improve for your website speed is page caching. There’s two ways you can do this.
You can do this using a service called CloudFlare which I use and recommend and I use it for all of my client sites. It provides an additional layer of security. It helps speed up your website. Number two, you need to talk to your hosting company to find out which plugin is best for your using, your situation and with their hosting platform to use on your website.
There are a variety of different plugins out there like W3 Total Cache and WP Super Cache and a lot more. There’s some really good plugins out there that can do a really good job of making your site fast. What you want to do is find out from them what they recommend. Then also make sure to get from them the recommended setting so that you can get it set up and that your site will be super-fast.
That’s what I’ve got for you today. Those are the three things that you can look at that will help you speed up your website. Make sure you hit that subscribe button. Hit that bell button to get the notification every time that we go live, or every time that I post a new video.
One last thing before I let you go, I want to invite you to join my free Facebook group. If you go to DigitalMarketingMasteryhq.com that will take you to my Facebook group. You will be able to go and join that group there. It’s a group of creators that are building businesses online.
