I read a book several years ago that claimed to possess the secret to get absolutely anything you want. The “secret” was simple enough in concept, and even though the book wasn’t that revolutionary sometimes it’s those things that are clear and plain as day that make the biggest difference and that’s what I’m talking about in this episode.
Good morning and welcome back to The Adventures in Digital Marketing Podcast. My name is Rob Orr and I’m the host. I just wanted to touch base on a couple things this morning.
It’s bright and early here, a little after five on Monday morning. I’m on my way into the office here. I spent a good portion of the weekend working on getting some stuff done that needed to be done.
It was one of those weekends where it’s just time to get caught up and punch out a bunch of stuff. It was really great in terms of being productive. I was able to also get my first YouTube video up and running too which will be on the blog later.
I’ll get that in place for you to be able to take a look at that so you can put a face to a name, or to a voice and know a little bit more about me. Anyway, the thing that I wanted to touch base with on this morning with you guys is there was a book that I read. This is probably 15, 1, 17 years ago.
It was a really inconsequential, tiny little book. I mean, it may have been 100 pages from front to back.
Honestly, the book wasn’t that great, but the principle behind the book stuck with me. I got the book as you may know—I started after I graduated from Florida State, I started my career in sales, business to business sales, B2C sales.
I did all kinds of different sales work. It was regularly encouraged by our sales managers for us to be regularly reading and sharpening the proverbial saw so to speak. So I came across this one little book that, like I said, was only about 100 pages maybe maximum. It’s called the Ultimate Secret to Getting Absolutely Everything You Want.
Obviously the title had quite a hook, right? It was really, really intriguing to see what this tiny little book is going to hold in terms of secrets and so I got this book. Like I said, the book wasn’t great. It wasn’t a best seller.
It’s not on any bestseller list by any stretch of the imagination, but the principle was really simple. It sticks with me to this day because I come back to it from time to time when I’m getting tired, or when I don’t feel like doing the things that I know that I need to do.
The ultimate secret to getting absolutely everything that you want is simply this, the willingness to commit to doing absolutely whatever it takes to get it done. The book talks about being willing to basically go anywhere and do anything in order to see what your goal is that you’re trying to accomplish, realized.
The reason I was thinking about that this weekend was when it comes to online marketing, or when it comes to trying to start your online business, there’s going to be lots of things that you’re going to run into I know that I have, but there’s lots of things that you’re going to run into where you’re going to just be like, “Man, I really don’t want to do that” or “Man, I would never ever see myself doing that particular thing in a given situation.”
We’re not talking about stuff where you’re breaking ethical or moral boundaries. That’s not it at all, but the concept was if you pulled out all the stops and never said no to whatever challenge was presented to you then you would be on your way to achieving whatever it is that you want to achieve.
So when it comes to digital marketing, what is it that you’re running into that you’re saying, “Oh, man, I would never do that.” It’s funny because there’s another session of the one funnel away challenge that is starting today as a matter of fact and I’m signed up for it and I’d be participating again.
The thought is this, how many people saw the promotional stuff that not only Click Funnels, but all of their affiliates are promoting in terms of the One Funnel Away Challenge and said, “Man, there’s no way I would spend $100 on that. There’s no way. I would never do that.
Because whatever reason you want to give yourself, or maybe I would never read a book by that guy, because one of the things taught by Russell in the One Funnel Away Challenge is publishing every day. I’ve had a blog for a long time so regular publishing is never been a big deal for me in the sense that I’ve always known that it was necessary.
For me, it got really uncomfortable when we started talking about the ways in which we should be publishing. He talked specifically a lot about video and a lot about podcasting because so much media production right now is done in those two mediums.
Russell does tons of video and then there’s podcasting. Lo and behold, Russell has a podcast called Marketing Secrets that he does from his car which what inspired me to do mine. Because a long time ago, I had a podcast, but all of the production and all of the preparation, and all of the stuff that comes along with doing that really just started to wear on me.
I couldn’t think of things to talk about and it was easy for me to just get overwhelmed by that in that podcast. The thing that Russell did was he decided that he would take that 15-minute commute in his car from his house to his office and collects his thoughts and do a podcast.
I thought when the first time I heard that I’m like, “Man, that’s a brilliant idea.” I can’t believe that more people aren’t doing this. I think because of the success that the One Funnel Away Challenge is that with so many people that are participating in it, now, they’re starting to pick up steam and more people are going to be doing this.
As I get better and better at podcasting and stuff like that then I hope to be able to eventually get better production and clean it up and make it more polished in the future.
For me right now, it’s overcoming that hump of saying, “Yeah, there’s no way I’m going to go through all of the headaches of starting a podcast again.” The thing that I do for my podcast, I open my iPhone and click record and start recording then when I’m done, I hit stop, and I’m done and then I upload it.
There’s no fanfare. There’s no big drawn-out process of post-production work at this point, it’s just about capturing that. The other biggest thing for me was this idea of doing videos and I’ve done video.
I talked about my course where I’ve done video. There are actually 23, 24 different videos that are part of that course on starting your own self hosted WordPress site. But doing regular video was something that I was like, “That was one of those things that I ran into a wall with?”
Because it’s uncomfortable, right? I mean who likes to see themselves on camera? Especially when you’re not used to being on camera and you’re not used to doing that kind of stuff. I know it’s not this guy.
I know that a lot of people struggle with that, but the whole thing, again, bringing this whole thing for full circle to the book that I was telling you about at the beginning is the ultimate secret to getting absolutely anything that you want is to be willing to do absolutely whatever it takes to get there. It’s about becoming uncomfortable. It’s about breaking out of your comfort zone.
It’s about breaking out and doing new things, and reaching out to new people and doing things that you aren’t comfortable with is really what it boils down to. That’s my thought for today.
So when it comes to you and what you’re doing with your business, you’ll find ways to break out. That would be my recommendation and suggestion is find ways to break the pattern of comfort and be willing to do whatever task is put before you in order for you to get to where you want to go whether it’s uncomfortable, whether you know how to do it or not, whether you’ve ever done it before.
Because that’s a big thing too, right? You don’t have experience doing something then how are you even supposed to know how to do it, much less be willing to say yes to doing that thing. But I found that going ahead and pulling the trigger on that thing and doing it is going to help you get down that road to doing some amazing things because that’s what it’s been at least in my experience.
I had an incredible experience over the weekend with my own list and some promotional stuff that I’ve been working on and I’ll tell you about that later. That was all the product of breaking out of my comfort zone and reaching out and making new connections and trying to do new things.
It’s the result of my effort to embrace the principle that I learned in that tiny little book that maybe was 100 pages. I told myself, I’m going to be willing to do whatever it takes. I’m not going to say no.
I’m not going to stop myself from doing the things that I’m challenged to do when I see those that I follow and those that are having the success in their life that they have that I want to have in my own life. I’m not going to stop myself from doing the things and embracing the challenges that they’re facing.
That’s what I’ve got for today. Embrace the uncomfortable, be willing to go anywhere, do anything, and do absolutely whatever it takes to achieve the goal that you want to achieve. I think it’s going to be something that could be really eye-opening for you because I know it has been for me.
That’s all I’ve got for today. Signing off until next time. Take care, everyone.
