Adventures In Digital Marketing Episode 10

I remember my dad telling me that “If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.” And another nugget of wisdom I got from him, was “if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” It’s the same thing I’m trying to teach my daughter. And it’s something I remind myself about all the time. Grant Cardone did an amazing job of describing the right mindset in his book, “Be Obsessed or Be Average” and I’m talking about how I’m applying that principle to my work.

Welcome back, everyone. My name is Rob Orr and this is The Adventures in Digital Marketing Podcast where I’m talking about all of the stuff that I’m working on. The experiments that I’m running, trying to find ways for making progress doing digital marketing online and talking about what works, what doesn’t and documenting the whole process along the way.

So, this morning I just wanted to touch on a quick update. I’m really excited. I sent out an email to my list on this yesterday.

I’m really, really close to being done with my book, The WordPress Website Blueprint that I’ve been working on for a while now. If you’re not familiar with that, I talked about it a couple episodes back. This is a book that I’m using that I’ve created from the transcripts from my WordPress course.

It’s going to be amazing. I’m so excited about it. The idea behind this is to get these tools and resources into the hands as many people as possible so that people can start working on and building their own self hosted WordPress sites.

There’s a lot of stuff out there. This is something that I’ve kind of ranted against for a while that most of the things that you see out there as far as WordPress info goes is either somebody is trying to get you to sign up through their affiliate link, or it’s thin content.

It doesn’t really go deep in the areas that you need to go if you’re trying to get started and that drives me nuts because that doesn’t really help you get to where you’re going.

There’s no shortage of people that I have helped and worked with over the years where they come to me and it’s like, “Okay, well, I did this self hosted WordPress thing because I watched [insert influencers name here].

I watched their tutorial on how to do a famous five minute install or something like that and now what do I do?” There’s so much more to getting started with your website than just installing WordPress on somebody’s hosting platform after you’ve signed up through their affiliate link.

I created this whole course based on that. Then the idea for the book is to get it into the hands of as many people as possible because I don’t want people getting stuck. Everybody has a different learning style, right?

Some people are great with watching the videos that I’ve got in the website workshop course. They love that and that works perfect for them. Some people do better listening to audio.

You can do that with the course too. Some people are visual learners and they like to have it laid out in a book in front of them and work through page by page. It reminds me kind of a funny story.

My daughter is a technological wish. She loves everything that when it comes to tech except when it comes to books. She absolutely refuses to do digital books like Kindle books.

Remember when she was young like five or six we bought a Kindle I should say. It wasn’t necessarily for her. We bought a Kindle and tried to get her to start learning how to do eBooks and reading books on the Kindle.

She just wasn’t having it. If she can’t hold the book in her hand she is much less inclined to engage with it unless she absolutely has to so that I’m making a read or something like that.

Anyway, she’s one of those people that have got to have it in her hands. The book is for people like her. It’s designed to be kind of a workbook format that you can follow along.

It’s got tons and tons and tons and tons of screenshots for how to do the various things that we’re talking about in the text of the book.

Anyway, just to update you, that’s almost done. I am putting the final touches on getting the cover done and getting the layout finished. The manuscript part of it is done. I got some cleanup there that we need to do and go back through.

I’m super psyched because I think it’s going to be really awesome. I think it’s going to help a lot of people. One of the things though is this is something that I’ve learned to whenever you’re stepping out into doing a new project like this, you always try to give yourself an idea as far as how much time it’s going to take to do those things.

The thing that I’ve learned over and over and over again is that even when you have given your best estimate for how long you think it’s going to take to complete a given task or project from start to finish you always need to multiply that by like three or four and it never fails.

This book is easily taken three times longer than I thought it would to get done. That being said, I mean it’s also moved along pretty well to get all the various different pieces done, too. I’m not complaining. I’m just saying that whenever you’re doing stuff you always think about that because there’s always definitely an influx of things that you didn’t think about or delays that you’re going to hit or things that you needed to clean up that you didn’t think about.

It’s going to take a lot more time than what you originally estimate. Thankfully, I’ve kind of started building that out into my estimates for the various different things that I’m working on.

Anyway, so that’s the book update. I’m super excited about that. One of the other things too that I wanted to just touch base on because it’s something I’ve been thinking about is this idea. I’ve been sick in the last week or so.

One of the things that I’ve been thinking about lately is just the mental effort that it takes to get from point A to point B when it comes to these things. It reminded me of a book that I’ve read a couple times now.

I’ve become a big fan of Grant Cardone in his work and just the results he’s produced in his life. It’s outstanding. If you don’t know his story, I definitely recommend that you check it out.

He has come from relative obscurity and poverty and through the force of determination and will is built himself a real estate empire and it has become profoundly successful.

He wrote a book called Be Obsessed Or Be Average. That book, he’s got three of them. I’m not sure if he’s got anything since then, but there’s the 10x Rule. There’s Be Obsessed Or Be Average and then there’s Sell or Be Sold are the three that I’m—I’m a fan of all of those.

If you if you haven’t read those books and you’re trying to do online business or you have the entrepreneurial bug, I definitely recommend those, but Be Obsessed Or Be Average is this idea that if you want to have extraordinary results in your life then you need to become obsessed with what’s involved to get to where you want to go.

It kind of reminds me of something that I tell my daughter all the time also it’s like, if it were easy everyone would be doing it. That’s kind of the premise behind Be Obsessed Or Be Average that if you are going to do extraordinary things in your life, if you want to have results that are going to be more substantial than your peers then you have to do things that your peers are just not willing to do.

That’s what I talked about with my daughter. I’m like, “You have to understand the 80/20 rule applies.” That for the 20% of the people that are getting the 80% of the results there are things that they are doing.

There is a level of effort and a level of engagement and obsession with getting the things they’re looking for that the other 80% in produce the 20% of results don’t have. As I think about all this stuff that I’ve been working on lately I mean, I’ve got this new podcast.

I’ve got my new YouTube channel and I’m posting content on my blog and sending your regular emails out to my list and the things that I’m working on.

It’s really just trying to take this mindset for me at least to be obsessed with what I’m trying to do. It’s funny because some of the things that he talks about in the book is like, we get obsessed with things that are harmful for us.

We get obsessed with the things that make us comfortable, or the things like food. We become obsessed with, or sports, right?

People get fanatical about their sports teams. I’m a graduate from Florida State. I have a passion for Florida State football.

The thing that really kind of stuck out to me is like, “Why do we give people permission to be obsessed about these other things that cannot deliver big results in their life. But then when they get obsessed with something that’s business-oriented, or something that is to try to generate income for their family or something like that when they get obsessed with those things all the sudden it becomes unhealthy.”

It’s some kind of mental disorder. That really struck me because I was like, that makes an awful lot of sense because if we are obsessed with the right things then the results of those obsessions can be healthy. They can be things that produce great results for our life.

That’s kind of where I’ve been because a lot of this stuff that I’ve been working on lately has really been outside of my comfort zone. I’m not pushing the boundaries on it. I feel like I’m completely uncomfortable and when you start doing a podcast, or you start doing video where you’re doing video blogging and stuff like that.

It will definitely put you into a frame of reference where you don’t really feel very comfortable about being on camera, or having your voice recorded, going through the efforts that you need to do to start a podcast. That’s really my challenge that I’m fighting through right now.

If you’re working on something and you find yourself running into a wall like I have been lately with just some of the things that we feel and the fear that comes along with that. I think that those things can be a good thing because you’re getting outside of your comfort zone and you’re trying to do things you’ve never tried to do before and you’re making progress.

That was one of the things that I mentioned in my email yesterday, it’s to create, produce, ship, constantly be working on getting things done, and constantly be working on creating new versions, iterating and just refining, learning in refining over and over again. It goes back and I’ll finish on this.

Russell Brunson had a big announcement this last Monday about some changes that are coming to his ClickFunnels platform. One of the things that he mentions often because it’s become their slogan is that this idea that your “always just your one funnel away.”

A lot of people get really excited about that idea about being just one funnel away, but they don’t understand what all goes behind that. Russell kind of elaborated that on the announcement that he made a Monday, he says, “You’re one funnel away, but that doesn’t mean that it’s your next funnel.”

It doesn’t mean that it’s the fifth funnel. It doesn’t mean that it’s the 50th funnel or the 100 funnel. But you’re always still just one funnel away from breaking through and delivering the kind of results that you want to see.

I thought that was interesting. Probably the biggest thing that I got out of the first time I went through the one funnel away challenge was your first efforts for online business are not going to be perfect. They may not even work.

The most important thing though is that you learn and you revise, and then you test, and you keep working on it until it does work because a lot of times when it comes to online business that we think that if we just automatically plug in and start our own website, or start building sales funnels, or whatever the case may be that we automatically should be super successful with the first time through with whatever we’re trying.

We don’t understand that there are failures and setbacks just stuff that’s not going to work that are the necessary building blocks to making progress into the next step.

Finally getting to in Russell’s example that one funnel that makes all the difference. There’s a journey that is associated with that where you are constantly working and refining and getting maybe a little bit result, and then you get a little less result or get a little more result.

It’s a constant process. Steven Larson, who’s one of the coaches in the one funnel away challenge. He talked about how his 37th funnel that was the one that allowed him to quit his day job and start doing what he wanted full time on his own.

So just think about that and don’t be afraid to dig in with serious passion in using Grant Cardone’s term obsession about trying to get to where you’re going. That’s all I’ve got for today. I hope this helped.
