What if I told you that you are losing business, leaking conversion opportunities, and turning off your ideal customers with the images you’re using?
What if I told you that the images that you’re using on your website are killing your business and destroying your results? Well, stick around because that’s exactly what we’re going to talk about today on Quick Tips Tuesday.
Welcome back everyone. Today, we are going to cover six common problems that we run into all the time with images on your website, and what you can do to fix it. What if I told you that you are leaking conversions, destroying your results, and turning off your ideal customer audience with the images that you’re using on your website? That would get your attention really quick, wouldn’t it? I know it did for me. Some things you just got to learn the hard way by repetition and experimentation.
Repetition and experimentation is something that I’ve been doing forever. I’ve been a web designer and developer for years. I’ve helped numerous people build and optimize their business online. One of the most important things that you need to pay attention to online is how you’re using images on your site.
What we’re going to cover today is six common problems that we have with website images and what you can do instead to make sure that your site and your funnel are operating at peak efficiency. Number one, make sure that your images that you’re using in your funnel and on your website are appealing to your ideal target market. We know who that is.
You’ve gone through the exercise to make sure you know who is in your target market and your ideal audiences. You know who these people are, what they like, what they dislike, how they operate, and what makes them tick. Then you need to make sure that you’re using images that are going to resonate with them on your website.
Number two, you need to make sure that you’re using images that have great compositional balance. What I mean is this, in an image that you want to use online, it has to be appropriate for the place that you want to use it in. It makes sense, right?
It seems like it would be common sense, but it doesn’t always work out that way in real life. What we see a lot of times is images that don’t make any sense for why they’re being used there. What you will see a lot of times is images that are too busy for where they’re being placed.
Or the composition of the image ends up with some kind of text that is laying over the subjects head in the image or somehow it’s otherwise obscured or the color tone in the image is messed up because you’re trying to place white text over a light background.
This is a huge problem. I run into this all the time, not only with just getting started bloggers, but with big corporate companies too. They get an idea about what they want to have in a certain place. We have to go through these steps to make sure that they understand how the image needs to be composed so that it will fit the place that we’re trying to use it online.
Number three, you need to make sure to use images that are framed up correctly. What I mean by that is this, meaning that if you’ve got a headshot of a person that you’re using in the background and you’re overlaying text into a place on your page, then you need to make sure that the shot is framed up so that it’ll cover the space appropriately.
This could mean that there’s too much space between the top of a subjects head in the shot, or there’s too much space or one side of the person is cut off on the edge of the photo or that the subject of the image ends up being so small that it can’t be used in a way that looks good.
Instead, what you need to do is to make sure when you’re picking your images that the subject is in the frame correctly, and that the color balance across the image is fitting for what you’re trying to accomplish online. Number four, and the common problems that we see with website images is that they’re really poorly shot images.
These are images that are coming off a Blackberry or a phone. I say Blackberry or phone because I’ve received images from clients that are were taken in exactly that way. I know it sounds crazy, but that’s the truth.
Instead, use a professional photographer when you can. This means that you’re going to hire a photographer to go out and create the shots that you’re looking for, for your website. That means that you go out and you create a shot list and you communicate with your photographer so that they know everything that you’re trying to do. They will do a good job of making sure that they get the images captured appropriately so that they can be used appropriately on your website.
Number five, I kind of touched on this before, but just for sake of clarity and to be 100% blunt, stop using smartphone images on your website. Smartphones have come a long way in terms of the technology, problem is it’s not the smartphone. The problem is the person operating the smartphone usually doesn’t know how to capture good images so that you can use them online.
Keep your smartphone in your pocket. Unless you’re one of those people that is really good with a selfie stick, really good to take a picture of yourself. You want to stay away from using smartphones to capture images that you plan on using online. Because otherwise they can come off looking cheap, and amateurish.
The final thing that I want to talk about is this, stay away from cheesy stock images. These are the images that you see with the smiling faces and corporate handshakes and everybody’s smiling in a picture. It doesn’t have anything to do with your business, doesn’t have anything to do with you.
If I showed up and knocked on the door of your office, none of those people would be in there. Those kinds of images have their place. There’s a time and a place to use stock images, but there are also sources out there that you can use where you can get great stock images to use on your website.
Instead of using stuffy, corny, overused, and just overall bad stock images, make sure that you’re being very thoughtful about what you’re using for your images. Meaning that you’re going to a photographer to get your shots taken and that you’ve got a shot list and you know what you need to get.
Real life action photos for who you are, and the people in your business are always going to be better. A photographer is going to do a really good job of capturing that for you.
Hopefully, that helps. That’ll give you something that you can use for your website and your funnel to make sure that you’re putting your best foot forward and that your online presence looks awesome and that you’re not turning off your customers. You’re not turning off your prospective customers.
You’re not turning off your target audience with the things that you’re using online. All these things are hopefully matching up with your brand and that you are presenting a unified brand package so that your target audience is going to be more inclined to know you, to like you, and to trust you ultimately so that they can do business with you online.
