Surprising way you can ruin your reputation online

Listen, I get it.
But for the love of all that is good and holy quit cold pitching people in DMs.
It’s spammy.
And it’s not a good look for you or your brand.
It may work for a very very small percentage of people but I’m not interested in liking your page, joining your group, downloading your lead magnet, getting on a call, or anything else until I’ve decided whether or not I like you.
It’s nothing personal.
But I don’t know you. I don’t know why I should listen to you, above anyone else, who’s cold messaging me in my DMs.
So instead of spamming people’s DMs, do you mind if I give you a little advice?
Instead of just cold-pitching something to someone in a DM, GIVE them something instead.
Go find their blog, and share their latest post on all your social media channels, THEN message them, tell them you shared it, and know how much you enjoyed it – with specific references so they can tell you actually read it.
Go leave a comment on their latest video, and let them know what you learned and how much you appreciate it.
Or even better, go download THEIR lead magnet, implement it, then tell them how much you got out of it, legitimately.
Even with just those three things, you can actually learn a lot more about them, than you could by looking at their FB or IG profile for seconds.
And you might even find – before you message them – they’re NOT a good fit for your pitch!
How much time would that save you?
But once you’ve given to them, and served them, do it over and over again.
Then don’t do anything else.
Do that 5, 10, 20 times.
THEN once you’re on their radar for the RIGHT reasons, it may be more reasonable to ask them to join your group, or if you’d be interested in their lead magnet.
Re-read chapter 9 in “Crush It” by Gary V until it sinks in.
Because what’s all too common in the untold number of cold pitches I get in my DMs is that you violate the very simple principle that Gary outlines in that chapter.
Yeah, that book is more than 10 years old, but the principles he talks about are MORE relevant now than they were then.
Whatever you do – stop cold pitching people.

(me in my caffeine chemical compound t-shirt with a coffee stain thankfully out of the frame, for giggles.)
