When it comes to learning new stuff, stretching your creative muscles, and doing new things sometimes you run in to stuff and say “yeah, I’m not going to do that.” I know I have. Way too often. Because it’s uncomfortable and unfamiliar. But, as I’ve been learning a lot lately, the obstacle IS the way. In this episode I’m talking about what I’m learning about overcoming the obstacle, and a sure-fire way to find out what obstacles may be standing in your way and how we can push through them. The Obstacle is The Way
Hey, welcome back everybody. I’m Rob Orr and this is The Adventures of Digital Marketing Podcast. Welcome back once again where we are talking about all the things in our virtual digital marketing lab and running experiments and finding out what’s working and what’s not working and talking about it and documenting our progress along the way towards financial independence, towards living the life we want to live. All those kinds of things. I just want to talk about two things real quick today.

Anyway, the book is out definitely want you to check that out. Definitely think it’s going to help people who are trying to get started with their WordPress websites. I tried to be very thorough and getting all the basic building blocks in place so that you can then go and build your website.
The next thing that I wanted to talk about is an extension off of that campaign that I have been thinking a lot about lately. It actually goes back to one of the first episodes of the podcast from when I started. If you remember back, there was an episode that I called The Ultimate Secret to Getting Absolutely Anything you Want.
It was about a book where talked about this secret. It’s a tiny, tiny little book. It’s only just, it’s got to be less than 100 pages. It can fit in your pocket. It’s just one of those little books and the principle in the book was that in order to get whatever it is that you want, you must be willing to do absolutely whatever it takes, or be willing to do whatever it takes to get it.
It’s a simple principle that you are the one who is not going to say no to anything and that you ultimately will end up pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. You will start to push the barriers and the boundaries.
You will be the one who is focused on getting to your goal and not letting any obstacle stand in your way. I was listening the other day to a podcast and one of the topics that they covered was a concept called The Obstacle Is The Way.
It was Steven Larson and Russell Brunson. They were doing a joint coaching session over Boxer with this guy and talking through a bunch of different things and there’s a lot of amazing lessons in that podcast by itself.
The thing that really stuck out to me is I wrestle and struggle to get my own book funnel going. When Steven started talking about The Obstacle Is The Way, a light came on for me.
Basically, what that means is the thing that is most difficult, the thing that you’re dreading doing, the thing that you don’t want to do, the thing that is kind of standing as the big barrier is the way through to success.
I kind of think about it like this, like if you’re looking at a path and you see where this path is and you see this kind of dark, scary path and you don’t want to go there because you’re not familiar with it.
You know and understand what’s going on. It’s kind of that path and it’s a lot less well worn, right? It’s also not a lot of people are going down that path. That’s really where this concept comes from.
So by engaging and digging into going through this path where the obstacle is and seeking to overcome that obstacle that is the way that you need to go that is going to take you to the next step in success in whatever it is that you’re trying to do with your business or really kind of anything. It can serve.
It’s kind of a life principle whether it’s getting in shape. A lot of times people don’t want to get up and get motivated to go to the gym. It’s an obstacle for them or they don’t want to take the time and effort to eat right and spend the money on groceries instead of going out to eat or those kinds of things.
They don’t want to take the effort and time that’s needed to learn a new skill like sales funnels or online marketing or web development or any of those kinds of things. So when you run into those obstacles, what is happening is the obstacle is actually the way that you need to be going.
I thought about this for me because when you’re just getting started and you’re trying to get something new off the ground, one of the biggest obstacles if not the biggest obstacle is traffic.
For me, it’s not hard to do the technical stuff. It’s not hard to do the creative stuff. It’s not hard for me to do the design work. I mean that’s where I make my living is doing the design work and the technical stuff, the web development and the programming and whatnot. All those things while this may be barriers for some people not barriers for me.
The big challenge really is traffic and then in order to get traffic there are some exercises you need to go through that will definitely push you outside of your comfort zone because you can’t do all this stuff by yourself. It’s really about making connections and really about Russell calls it “The Dream 100 List” That you’ve got 100 targets that you’re trying to build relationships with and an effort to try to build a network of people.
It could be a doing an email outreach campaign or something like that. I don’t know about you, but for me that stuff gets really uncomfortable really quickly. It can be really challenging to see what needs to be done in the sense that those are the things that are going to be the obstacles that I need to overcome in order to see the success that I want to see in this stuff.
Because traffic is hard for everybody and connecting in relationships and community and that kind of stuff comes naturally to a lot of people. My wife is one of those people. My wife has never met a stranger. She is kind and friendly and outgoing. She is just an amazing lady.
The whole interpersonal connection thing goes really easily for her. For me, I’m kind of the opposite. I am not the extrovert. I am really quite a bit the opposite. So doing this podcast and doing Facebook Live and doing YouTube is definitely pushing me outside of my comfort zone.
For me, the idea is really just dialing in and finding the obstacle. That’s what I’m working on right now is trying to see what I need to be doing to push through the obstacle that’s going to help me to get there and a lot of that has to do with traffic and relationships and that kind of stuff.
I want to put it out there for you just to get your wheels turning and see if you can identify what the obstacle is for you. Then figure out what it is that you need to be willing to do to push through it. Put a couple different lessons together here where going back to the ultimate secret book, you got to be willing to do absolutely whatever it takes to get there.
So when you’ve got the obstacle and you see the obstacle then what do you need to do to push through to make it through to the other side? That’s really all I wanted to get into today is to put that out there for you because I know that that is something that stumps me. I have seen it stump a lot of my customers and clients and friends.
It’s a really big challenge. So when you are confronted with maybe you’re going through a course or something. Because this is kind of the way that I encountered it. Maybe you’re going through a course and you go, “Yeah, that’s really great, but I’m not going to do that whatever that may be.”
There is a major indicator right there that that is your obstacle. I’ve learned it from The One Funnel Away Challenge. I’ve learned it from some of the other materials that I have studied and books that I’ve read. It kind of like the light has come on that whenever I’m saying that
I’m not going to do that, that’s usually exactly what I need to do. I put that out there as a challenge for you. We can fight through this stuff together. I would love to hear— if you would leave me a comment.
