In order to be successful online you have to start by actually getting online! And what better way to do that than with a challenge? That’s what I’m talking about in today’s episode. I’ve got the PERFECT solution for helping you build and launch your website, even if you don’t have any tech skills. Seriously – this is the training you’ve been looking for!
Build & Launch WordPress
Welcome back everyone to Adventures in Digital Marketing. My name is Rob Orr. I’m your host. Today, we are going to talk about the WordPress website challenge that I still don’t have a name for. Let’s go ahead and jump right in.
It is a crisp and cool early morning here in Tallahassee. This morning on my mind is my WordPress challenge that I’ve got coming up and I’m really excited about this. I wanted to give you a little bit of the backstory behind why I’m doing this and how I think it’s going to be helpful.
Reaching Into The Wayback Machine
Here’s kind of the thought process. So when I think back to when I was getting started, I remember how hard it was. I didn’t know a lot about and they’re really there wasn’t a lot to know about how to build a website. Back when I was first getting started, I remember I would go to Borders. If you remember Borders, this is reaching back a few years, but you go into the programming or the technology section.
If you remember, you’re old enough to remember and they probably still have them in bookstores. Although most of that stuff seems to have transitioned to online, but they had these huge books. These were programming books for languages where they would teach you languages and stuff like that. Sometimes you would have a book around a content management system.
There were some early WordPress books and Drupal books. For a couple other of the content management frameworks that were around then, but they were really kind of high level. Everything was high level especially the programming books.
My Confusing Start To Building A Website
There was no real solution-oriented kind of book that was out at that time. I had a baby, my daughter who’s almost 15 was just a baby then. I just wanted to build a website. I remember I spent a lot of time googling and searching for answers and trying to figure out different ways that I could do it because I gotten back into programming because I started learning programming as a kid.
I had gotten back into it especially with web technology. I didn’t know how to take the next step. I didn’t know how to build a website, I call it a password protected website I didn’t even know to call it content management system. I was trying to figure out how to build these content managed websites.
So I figured, “Hey, I’m just going to teach myself how to program.” Now, the good thing about that is it did teach me how to program. I learned a lot and then built an entire career based on that. Really, I was just looking for a solution to learn how to build a website so I could put up some pictures and then send login information to my mom and dad who live in different cities and family because I didn’t want to just put it out there for all the world to see.
Wouldn’t It Be Great If…
This is before the days of Facebook where everybody’s plastering everything about their lives out there for the world to see. I was very protective over those pictures of my baby girl. Anyway, I’ve wanted to learn how to build this website.
I couldn’t find the resources to do it. It was driving me crazy. I couldn’t figure it out. I’m like, “Man, wouldn’t it be awesome if I could create something to help people to build and launch their websites to avoid that kind of frustration that I had when I was first getting started?”
Because this is the thing that I see a lot. I participate in a lot of different places online. I get messages in messenger and in my email inbox from people asking WordPress questions. I see the things that people struggle with. There are some fundamental kinds of things that people struggle with when it comes to getting up and running with their website.
How To Get Started With WordPress
These people are the people that want to start a blog. They’re serious about it. They’re serious enough about it to where they want to do it the right way. They want to use self-hosted WordPress set up. They want it to look good, but they really don’t know what to do other than that. That’s really the big challenge that I see that a lot of people are facing.
The whole idea behind me creating this WordPress website challenge and maybe I will call it the One Website Away Challenge because that’s how I’ve got it actually written out of my notes is the One Website Away Challenge.
It’s designed to help you go from nothing with no tech skills to a fully built out professional looking website with content intent and all. That’s what this challenge is going to be. So if you’ve been paying attention to any of the other things that I’ve talked about recently, one of the big things that I’ve talked about is the Seven Pillars of Digital Marketing.
Tomorrow afternoon, I believe it’s probably going to be five o’clock, I’ll have to update you on that. Tomorrow afternoon, we’re going to be covering the second pillar. Anyway, make sure you tune in for that. The first pillar that I talked about last Thursday was the need for having a rock solid, high quality professional website.
To dispel maybe a myth that may be occurring in your mind. You don’t have to hire a web designer to build a high quality professional rock solid WordPress site.
The whole point of this challenge is for you to be able to build that for yourself. Anyway, that’s what the goal is because one of those Seven Pillars is for you to have this website. It serves as the central hub for everything that you’re going to do online.
That means, for your social stuff that you’re going to be doing, for the audience building that you’re going to be doing, for the sales related stuff that hopefully you’ll eventually be doing online. First and foremost, my goal with this WordPress challenge is to get you set up with this centralized hub that is your personal website.
On this website, you’re going to have your blog. You’re going to have your content. You’re going to have lots of things. We got to start at square one. We’ve got to start. We’ve got to begin at the beginning and start with the basics. That’s what the WordPress challenge is built out to be. I’m really excited about this because the whole idea is to walk you through and go step by step for everything that you need to do.
What The WordPress Challenge Actually Is
We’re going to talk about branding and what you need to be looking for as you get started for branding. Then we’re going to talk about your domain name, how to pick a domain name and how to pick a hosting service. Then we’re going to talk about how to get WordPress installed.
I’m going to show you all of the steps that you need to take to walk through exactly what you need to do to get WordPress installed. You don’t have to be a web developer to do this. You don’t even have to have tech skills to do this. Then we’re going to talk about how to do to get your theme installed, and how to choose a theme and why you should choose one theme over another and how that matches up with your branding that we would have talked about in one of the previous sections.
Then we’re going to talk about plugins. We’re going to talk about getting your content setup and all of these things that you need to do so that by the end of the challenge, you are going to have a rock-solid, professional, high quality, personal self-hosted WordPress site that you can build your online empire on top of. I talked about this last week on the Facebook Live that all of the big brands that you are familiar with and those that you look up to, almost all of them have a WordPress site that serves as that central hub for all that they do.
Yeah, we’re going to be on YouTube. Yeah, we’re going to be on Facebook and Instagram, and Pinterest and all those places. We all will have that central place where you call your online home. Your space in the internet world that is your home that you control. We’re going to start with that. I would love for you to go to thewpchallenge.com and get on the list.
This is going to be a limited access challenge this first time around because I need to make sure that we’ve got all of the bugs and kinks worked out so that you’ll be able to do what you need to do. Definitely go to thewpchallenge.com and put yourself on the waiting list there so that I can keep you up to date.
I’m planning on rolling this out here over the next couple of weeks. Definitely want you to be part of that. I’ll be talking about that and all the other places that I’m a part of, but we’re going to be going through the Seven Pillars step by step.
This main one is this is getting your central home base online, all squared away. That’s what I’ve got for today. I hope that you guys are doing great. I’m looking forward to the WordPress website challenge.
Again, that may or may not be the name, but at least I got the domain name. I’ll have all that stuff up later today. I just had to talk about it because I am really excited about this and I can’t really sit on it any longer.
So if you made a new year’s resolution that you’re finally going to take that next step and build out your website. Well, now’s the time. You don’t have any excuses now. This is going to help you do what you are trying to do.
That’s what I’ve got for today. Go to thewpchallenge.com to get on the waiting list there. I’ll keep you up to date. Make sure that you subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, and all of the various places. If you don’t use iTunes, this podcast is available on all of the other major outlets where you find podcasts.
I would love to have you subscribe. Then you can always go to my blog at http://roborr.net/ and get the transcript and leave me a comment. I really want to hear from you guys and hear what’s working for you and see where you need help. That’s what I’ve got for today.
You guys take care. We’ll talk to you later. Bye.
