Have you heard Sara Blakely’s story? I’ve heard it for years – she’s alumna of my alma mater, Florida State University, so when the topic of my college comes up, her name is usually pretty quick to be mentioned. I was reminded of her story at Funnel Hacking Live and it’s an amazing story. But the light really came on for me this time and I saw her story in a whole new light.

You see, as online entrepreneurs, we struggle when things get hard. We wonder if we’re cut out for all this. We wonder (with a healthy twinge of jealousy) at how the known entities in our space have had so much success, and are confused when we can’t replicate it.

For us, discouragement and frustration are all too real – no one is immune from these things.

But after revisting Sara’s story at FHL I figured out two critical components – two indispensable qualities – that are absolutely critical if we’re going to make it to the level we aspire to, and that’s what I’m talking about in this episode.

The Keys To Online Success

Good morning and welcome back everybody to Adventures in Digital Marketing. I’m Rob Orr. I’m your host. Today, I want to talk about two absolutely indispensable qualities that they lay the foundation for any kind of success. That’s what we’re going to talk about today.

As you well know, if you’ve listened to this podcast at all, I went to Funnel Hacking Live at the end of January this year. Tony Robbins was one of the main speakers, or probably, I guess, outside of Russell, the main speaker.

One of the things that he talked about was Sara Blakely story. It really kind of opened my eyes to what it really takes to be successful in anything and be more than anything else. It was like one of those things where you kind of have seen like from the rest of your life where you’re looking back and it’s like,  you hear this particular quality being pointed out over and over and over again like they do in movies when they’re trying to reveal a clue or something like that.  They’re going back through all the history of all the times that’s been pointed out.

Anyway, that’s what it was like for me because it finally dawned on me what it really takes. So if you don’t know, the founder of Spanx is a Florida State graduate named Sara Blakely. He talked about her story and being able to break through and finally get the success that she had been after in her life. There were two things that really jumped out.

Persistence and Unshakable Belief

Like I said, the more I thought about it, the more I’m like, “Man, I’ve been hearing this for years. This is unbelievable.” I don’t know why I didn’t realize this sooner. The first one is persistence. The second one is an unshakable belief in what you’re working on. That’s not even really a good way to say it.

It’s an unshakable belief in your product or service. Let’s just say it that way and absolute confidence, a 100% certainty. That’s one of Tony Robbins words is certainty. I remember back several years ago, I was listening to a sales training program from Brian Tracy. He talked about how the most successful sales people were the people that were completely bought in to the product that they were selling and representing.

I tried that when I worked in sales. I could never really get myself there. It’s probably one of the reasons why I hated working in sales so much. It makes total sense to me now in my own business and the work that I do that you has to have this unshakable confidence. We’ll talk more about that in a minute. The other part of it is persistence.

The thing that he pointed out about Sara Blakely was that she was just absolutely relentless in trying to get her products into stores. She was just constantly meeting with potential buyers and constantly going and trying and having doors slammed in her face, getting hung up on phone calls and just rejection after rejection after rejection.

It was long past the point that anybody else would have reasonably said, “You know what I’ve had enough.” It’s that persistence that put her into the office and the person that ultimately ended up making that first buy from her and was able to start making some sales with her product.

The thought of this is this, when we’re working on a website or a sales funnel or we’re trying to do something online just the quality of showing up every day puts you ahead of the competition by leaps and bounds because a lot of people will give up.

75% of people are just going to quit after it gets hard. I mean, that’s just a given that when you are given some instructions about what you need to do in order to take the next step with your business, and you find it particularly challenging, being relentlessly persistent is the quality or the characteristic that you need to have in order to put yourself in a position to be successful.

The Challenge of Publishing Regularly

I think that Russell Brunson has said it too. Just showing up sometimes is enough. So if you show up enough times, you are outpacing your competition past the point where they just would have given up. Think about this in relation to a blog. One of the challenges and one of the things that I talk about a lot on this podcast is publishing regularly and really all the time every day.

That is something that most content creators are going to look at. First of all, they’re not even going to do it. I know for me the first time that I took the One Funnel Away Challenge for me I just kind of blew that off. I kind of got a little bit into it.

The more that I thought about it, the more that I studied, the more that I read, the more that I understood the concept, the more I was able to master the willpower and the effort to continue to create even when it gets hard. It is hard. It’s definitely hard to figure out something to talk about every day on a podcast or something to publish every day about on YouTube. It’s hard to write a blog post every day. The point is, is just showing up will put you ahead of your competition.

That’s what I wanted to talk about on that particular point. So, just show up and you will outpace 75% of your competition by just going another day. Then, the other part of it is an unshakable belief in your product or service. What power Sara Blakely’s persistence was her unshakable belief that her product could revolutionize the way women felt about themselves in the way they dressed with her products.

She simply would not be told otherwise it wouldn’t back down. So when you think about your product or service, do you really, really believe in it enough to continue to push through? So here is the challenge for me. I’m working on a bunch of new stuff. The things that I’m working on are things that I am really working on building from a perspective that I think that the world needs to hear this thing.

They need to learn or have this product or service that I’m going to offer. Because if I don’t have that unshakable belief in what I’m offering for sale, or what I’m publishing about, or what I am creating content around that, really, I mean, if I don’t believe it, why should I expect anybody else to believe it? Why should I expect you to listen to this podcast? Why should I expect anybody else to think that I’ve got anything worthwhile to say?

The big challenge then, is to build your products and services from that point that you are absolutely all in, sold out in belief that you’re going to be able to provide the service or the result with your product or service that the world needs to know about it. So that’s really what I had for today. I wanted to talk about those two qualities because they’re things that I’m working on.

Two Indispensable Qualities or Entrepreneurs

The persistence and the unshakable belief in what I’m doing are two qualities that I know that I need to work on more in my own life and my own business. I wanted to challenge you with that this morning because I think that if you can just dig into these two characteristics and really start to dig deep on them, they’re going to help you to be able to make breakthroughs in your business and in your life that you previously thought were impossible.

Maybe it’s a goal or something like that. Just by continuing to show up, you are going to put yourself ahead of the competition. You have to cultivate that unshakable belief that what you’re doing is going to deliver on what it promises. That’s what I’ve got for you guys today. I wanted to challenge you with that.

It’s challenging to me, I know. Take this and put it into action in your business, in your life, and you’re going to see results. There is no doubt about that in my mind.
